Ride Ten Thousand 2021

With the closing of Freeport Bicycle Co. this year, Rapha Chicago has taken the lead and is presenting the 2021 Ten Thousand which is taking place between May 28–June 13. Join along for some of the best gravel roads the Midwest has to offer!

Ride any of the Ten Thousand routes within a 2 week window and receive a prize from Rapha. There are 3 route options, allowing riders to choose their level of difficulty and the climbing they want to take on. Hint: they’re all difficult and exquisitely beautiful.

Intermediate Route: Approximately 71 miles / 5,000 ft of climbing

Advanced Route: Approximately 130 miles / 10,000 ft of climbing

XL Route: Approximately 233 miles / 17,000 ft of climbing

View / download the routes here: Ride Ten Thousand Routes

This is an unsupported event and therefore riders are responsible for themselves. Riding in this area of Illinois is very challenging. The routes take you through very remote areas with little access to food and water. It is imperative that riders come prepared for a very challenging day on the bike. All routes feature a majority of gravel roads. Minimum recommended tire width is 32mm, while 40mm+ is ideal.

This event is free.

The Ten Thousand 2020 #ridetenthousand

This year Freeport Bicycle Co and Comrade are posting the Ten Thousand route up as a solo ride challenge on Ridespot.org.

Why Ridespot? It’s from the fine folks at People for Bikes and we really like them, everybody likes them, plus they use your rider data to improve cycling. Once you set up a Ride Spot account you can join the challenge. You can use ride spot to tell a story about your ride and share pictures. We want to hear all about your ride.

As always, it’s self-supported. The route passes through two different towns where you can get supplies but if you have a mechanical or run out of food no one will be out there to help. Please overpack and overprepare! Run a little bigger tire, take an extra water bottle, bring those extra tools. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

The ride does NOT start in Freeport, it starts at Joe Westwood Park 331 W. South St Pearl City IL.

It’s beautiful in the Driftless, take your time, take lots of pictures. Make your social media posts public so we can share. Use hashtag #ridetenthousand. Just to double verify you completed the route email your ride data to stu@freeportbicycles.com and email with any questions.

At the end of the challenge period we will draw names from the finisher list for some sick prizes! Prizes are not for fastest, just totally random male and female from the finisher list. We will also have a prize for the best ride story on RideSpot.org

If you cheat and you win a prize we will find out and tell everyone –so when you show up to cycling events everyone will give you stern looks.

Two challenges are available a 50 mile and a 100 mile.

Check them out here, and after you sign in you can download the GPS files for your devices:

Ride Ten Thousand

A 120-ish mile bicycle adventure (route options for 75 and 50 mile as well) with roughly 10,000 ft. of elevation gain in Illinois’ Driftless region. Primarily on gravel, though there will be paved sections along the way. There will be a 75 and 50 mile option. It always takes place the Sunday before Memorial Day, and starts and ends at Freeport Bicycle Co. #ridetenthousand

Ride leaves from in front of Freeport Bicycle Co. on Sunday May 26th at 9:00 am sharp! Plenty of street parking is available in downtown Freeport, please come inside the bike shop when you arrive to sign waiver and pickup a printed route map if you would like one. Routes are listed here for all your GPS computers:

130 mile https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29995549
75 mile https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30021971
50 mile https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27556785

It won’t be 100 degrees this year so the water stops won’t be as frequent. Pack lots of food and water! There will be a water stop at the point of no return where the 130 and 75 split. At mile 52 you can go off route to a gas station in Hanover, and at mile 82 you can go off route into Mt Carroll. Note that going into Mt. Carroll will add about 5 miles to your day. Slurp N Burp will be on route for all 3 routes. They have cokes, beer, burgers, chips…. It will be at mile 109 for the Ten Thousand route. The 50 and 75 are the same as last year. There is a fair amount of pavement this year on 130 mile course but it’s the only way we could connect all of the Driftless’ greatest hits, including Funk Rd which we just scouted out today and it’s a good one.
