Sklar Bikes at Comrade Cycles: Build Your PBJ or SuperSomething in Chicago

We carry Sklar Bikes and love building them up. If you’ve been eyeing a PBJ or SuperSomething and want help speccing it out, come talk to us. We’ll help you navigate frame sizing, component choices, and put together a build that makes sense for how you actually ride.

Sklar PBJ — The All-Terrain Rigid Mountain Bike

The PBJ (Performance Basket Jammer) is Sklar’s rigid 29er — an all-terrain bike that’s equally at home on singletrack, gravel roads, and multi-day tours. The adjustable modular dropouts let you run single speed, geared, or experiment with different chainstay lengths , and the frame is loaded with mounts for racks, bags, fenders, and cargo cages.

The frame is designed for 2.6-inch tire clearance with the possibility of running up to 2.8 inches, and it’s built around Boost spacing with size-specific tubing — larger sizes get slightly larger-diameter seatstays, smaller sizes get thinner ones, keeping ride quality consistent across the range. It runs rigid or can take a 100–120mm suspension fork if you want it to double as an XC hardtail.

This is a genuinely versatile platform. You can build it as a stripped-down singlespeed townie, a loaded tourer with a front rack and bags, or a capable trail bike with a dropper and suspension fork. We’ve built them several ways and are happy to walk you through the options.

PBJ highlights:

  • Double-butted heat-treated chromoly steel frame and fork
  • 29″ wheel, wide tire clearance (2.6″–2.8″)
  • Sliding modular dropouts — geared, singlespeed, or UDH compatible
  • Suspension corrected for 100–120mm fork
  • Full rack, fender, and bag mount support
  • Threaded bottom bracket
  • Internal dynamo routing in fork
  • Five sizes (XS–XL)

Sklar SuperSomething — The Gravel and All-Road Bike

The SuperSomething is Sklar’s drop-bar gravel bike — an incredibly versatile platform built to handle variable road and all-terrain needs, designed to grow and change along with your riding style. It sits about 60% of the way along the gravel spectrum between road bike and mountain bike: fast and light enough for road rides, capable enough to follow you onto singletrack.

The updated V2 features a lighter tubeset, more mounting points, clearance for tires up to 700×52mm, UDH dropouts, a threaded bottom bracket, and a 27.2mm seatpost. It’s available in steel with a steel or optional carbon fork, or in titanium. Five sizes from S to XL — and the XL is a genuine XL, built for tall riders.

We love this bike for Chicago riders who want one bike that handles the lakefront path, gravel roads out of the city, and whatever else comes up. It’s also a strong choice for bikepacking — the mounting options and geometry make it a natural tourer.

SuperSomething highlights:

  • Double-butted heat-treated chromoly steel (titanium version also available)
  • 700×52mm tire clearance
  • UDH dropouts — compatible with SRAM Transmission and all 1x drivetrains
  • Flat-mount disc brakes, 12mm thru-axles
  • 3 bottle cage mounts including one under the downtube
  • Full rack and fender compatibility
  • Steel or carbon fork options
  • Threaded bottom bracket, 27.2mm seatpost
  • Five sizes (S–XL)
